...large numbers of anterogradely labeled axons arising from the PRC take a ventral course through the periventricular gray, and, although the vast majority of these fibers continue rostrally through the posterior hypothalamic nucleus (Fig. 5J,K), a smaller group of axons enters the ventral tegmental area, which seems to receive a moderate innervation, and then appears to continue rostrally through the medial forebrain bundle (Fig. 5J–L).

General description technique/protocol: In five experiments, the PHA-L injection labeled neurons that were confined almost entirely to the PRC. In all of these experiments, a very similar pattern of anterogradely labeled fibers was observed, and of these, we choose experiment PRC11 (Figs. 4, 5) as a prototype to illustrate our results, because the injection in that experiment labeled the most extensive population of cells in the PRC
