everywherebilateralexists... neurotensin mRNA is found in a very large population of LS neurons. Moreover, as with enkephalin, most neurons expressing neurotensin mRNA were observed in the LSr, in contrast to somatostatin hybridization, which was observed mainly in the LSc. At the most rostral levels of the LS (Fig. 3A,B,E,F) both enkephalinergic and neurotensinergic cells are distributed through the cytoarchitectonically defined ventral and intermediate parts, with some of the former even extending into the dorsal part. At progressively more caudal levels, both enkephalin and neurotensin mRNA-expressing cells are found progressively more ventrally and medially in the LS. Finally, at the level of sections near the rostral end of the septofimbrial nucleus, only scattered enkephalinergic neurons were observed in the LS, and no preproneurotensin mRNA-expressing cells were found (Fig. 3I,J,M,N)...neurotensin labeling is more dense medially where enkephalin-labeling is less abundant. Nevertheless, labeling for both probes was largely coextensive, and the whole area displaying hybridization for both enkephalin and neurotensin is now called the LSr. Collator note: see Table 3, page 95.Risold P.Y. & Swanson L.W., 1997
