From the injection site, a group of PHAL-labeled axons extends into the rostral end of the BSTju, where individual axons display many branches with very dense terminal boutons (Fig. 4F and G) .

General description technique/protocol: Two injections are centered in midrostrocaudal levels of the nucleus, and are almost entirely confined within its borders (Fig. 1; BST55 and BST99) , whereas the third is centered in the rostral tip of the nucleus Fig. 1; BST42 . The results of experiment BST55 (Figs. 1 and 2) are illustrated in detail; its projection pattern is indistinguishable from that labeled in the other two experiments with injections restricted almost entirely to the BSTju. In experiment BST55, the only spread of the effective injection site was to several labeled neurons in the BSTov.
