General description technique/protocol: BSTpr projections are displayed nicely in experiment BST117 (Figs. 1B,B', 2), where the PHAL injection site is centered in midrostrocaudal levels of the nucleus, ventral to the lateral tip of the descending column of the fornix--with very few labeled neurons in adjacent regions of the BSTif. Most PHAL-labeled neurons in the BSTpr are smaller than those in the BSTif, and they tend to be bipolar, with the dendrites tending to orient along a dorsolateral to ventromedial plane, parallel to the long axis of the nucleus as viewed in transverse sections (Fig. 1B).
